VU games rules to follow

RULES

VU Games and all of the system operators appreciate your cooperation and hope you enjoy the exciting games and great community here on VU Games. Playing on VU Games is a privilege, not a right. VU Games reserves the right to deny access at any time at the discretion of VU Games.

Additionally, VU Games, in its sole discretion, may disqualify a Member for engaging in any conduct that VU Games deems to be improper, unfair or otherwise adverse to the operation of the VU Games Network or detrimental to other users of the VU Games Network.

Basically, all we expect is a little common courtesy. Most folks know what is appropriate and what is not. If you must have a heated argument with someone simply take it to a private/password-protected room and out of the public areas. Some games lend themselves to stronger language some do not. Respect the flavor of the room and the players around you and there shouldn't be a problem.

Note that as part of the registration process, you will be asked to submit certain information about yourself to assist VU Games to identify yourself as a ‘unique user.’ Additionally, you hereby acknowledge that VU games has the right to collect certain identification information about your computer and its operating system, including, but not necessarily limited to, the identification numbers of your hard drives, central processing unit, IP addresses and operating systems for identification purposes without any further notice to you.

    • Please do not flood chats (impede conversations by using repeated blocks of text) or "shout" at other members through the use of capital letters. This behavior may lead to loss of VU Games privileges.
    • When you choose a screen name, or identify a chat room, or otherwise create a label that can be seen by other Members, you must abide by the rules of common decency. If VU Games, in its sole discretion, finds such a label offensive, it reserves the right to change the name, remove the label and corresponding chat room and/or suspend you from all future games and Prize Draws.

Should VU Games determine, in its sole discretion, that you have violated any of the prohibitions contained in this Code of Conduct, VU Games shall have no obligation to award any prizes won by you, and may select an alternate winner.

ANY ATTemPT BY YOU OR ANY OTHER PLAYER TO DELIBERATELY DAMAGE VU GAMES' WEB SITE OR UNDERMINE THE LEGITIMATE OPERATION OF THE PROMOTION IS A VIOLATION OF CRIMINAL AND CIVIL LAWS AND, SHOULD SUCH AN ATTemPT BE MADE, VU GAMES RESERVES THE RIGHT TO SEEK DAMAGES FROM ANY SUCH PLAYER TO THE FULLEST EXTENT PERMITTED BY LAW.

  4. What to do if you Experience a Problem While Playing VU Games Games.

If you experience a problem with another player while playing one of the Hoyle games, the best thing to do is to report the problem to VU Games. To do this just click on the player's name you are having trouble with and then click on complaint; follow the simple online directions from there. The Complaint Tool captures information about the problem including the e-mail address of both parties and the last 40 lines of chat. Complaints go to the Sysop who will review them and take appropriate steps. You may not receive a response from the Sysop; but don't despair, all complaints are read and assessed.

If it is a website problem that you wish to report the best thing to do is to contact the customer service department by using this link; http://support.vugames.com

Note that it is a good idea to use a working e-mail address in your user profile. If the Sysop needs to contact the person sending the complaint for clarification or more information, and the e-mail is bogus, then the complaint will not be addressed. Likewise if you are complained about and the Sysop needs to get your side of the story, but if your e-mail is invalid, there will be no choice but to assume the complaint is valid and take appropriate steps.

Euchre rules

How to Play Euchre

To Play your Cards

  • Click the card you want to play and drag it to its open spot on the table, and drop it.

  • Or right-click the card you want, and it will be automatically placed on the table.

    Table Options

Each individual Hoyle Channel game has its own table options, and some games have more options than others. Only the first person to Sit at an empty table can adjust these table options. Once you're Seated at a table, click onto the table itself, or the table info box to adjust the table options. You may change the options between games (or hands), but the first person who enters the room is the only person who can make the changes.

    Screen information

  • The player with a tiny (D) next to their screen name is the dealer.

  • The player to the left of the dealer plays first.

  • The small letters: N, S, E, and W next to players' screen names represent North, South, East and West - the location of players at the table.

    Strategies and Tips

  • Take tricks whenever you can. Don't hold onto a high card in a suit that has already been played.

  • If it's your lead and you're holding two or more trumps, lead a trump. It might not win, but it will suck most of the remaining trumps out of the other players' hands. Your other trump cards then become more powerful.

  • Remember to cooperate with your partner. Don't play a high trump if your partner has just done so.

    Rules for Euchre

Euchre is a card game played by four people at a time - two teams of two. Partners face each other across the table. However, you can play against the computer with one to 3 people. Euchre is played with a pack of 24 cards: from a standard 52-card pack, but with 28 cards removed - all cards below the nine.

    Object of the Game

  • The object of each hand is to win at least three Tricks out of a possible five. The first team to ten points wins the game.

  • The team that called trumps wins one point for making three or four tricks. If the team that called trumps fails at doing this, it is Euchred - scores no points, and their opponents win two points.

  • If the team who called trumps makes all five tricks, called March, they score two points.

  • For a person playing alone: for three or four tricks, one point; for March, four points.

    Game Play

  • Five cards are dealt to each player. The pack is placed face-down with the top card turned face-up.

  • The first player to the left of the dealer may either pass or accept the turned-up card as trumps. If the first player passes, the next player makes the same decision, and so on. When a player accepts the turned-up card as trumps, the dealer takes the turned-up card into his or her hand and then discards a card.

  • If all players pass the right to determine trumps, the dealer removes the turned-up card. The suit of the rejected card may not be used for trumps.

  • The first player to the left of the dealer then has the right to name the trump suit, or to pass. If a player passes, the next player calls the trump suit or passes, until the option reaches the dealer again.

  • If all players pass a second time around, the cards are thrown in for a new deal from the next dealer in line.

  • The player that declares the trump suit may declare, I Play Alone. The partner of this player lays his or her cards facedown and does not participate in the hand.

  • In play, players must follow the suit of whatever card is lead if they are able. A trick is won by the highest trump or by the highest card of the suit led. The winner of a trick leads the next trick.

    Rank of Cards

  • The rank of cards in each non-trump suit from highest to lowest: Ace, King, Queen, Jack, 10, 9.

    Rank of Cards in Trumps

  • The Jack of the trump suit (the Right Bower), followed by the Jack of the same color (the Left Bower).

  • For example, if Hearts are trumps, they rank as follows: the Jack of Hearts, the Jack of Diamonds, and then the rest of the Hearts. If a black suit is chosen, then the Jack of that suit is highest, followed by the Jack of the other black suit, then the rest of the trumps.

  • The trump suit always has seven cards. The next suit, same color as the trump suit, has five. And the Cross-suits - opposite color from the trump, each have six.

    Playing the Ratings Game

No doubt about it — competition adds a spark of excitement to the world of online games! Being able to see how you measure up to your fellow card and board players is an exciting way to show off your skills and earn bragging rights. So in response to numerous requests, flipside.com has developed a rating system for Hoyle games. The new system incorporates a number of important features, some of which are unique to flipside.com: The most popular ratings method, US Chess Federation (USCF), is used for all games except backgammon, which uses FIBS (First Internet Backgammon Server).

  • Players are able to specify whether a particular table is rated or not within any room and place constraints on who can join their table based on ratings.
  • In order to allow players of the more popular games (e.g. Spades, Euchre, Hearts, etc.) to more easily find others who want to play a rated game, we support rooms in which the players cannot turn off ratings.
  • Players may not engage in private chat in a rated game.
  • Players may always view a list of the top 10 rated players in the current room.
  • Players may view other players' ratings even in non-rated rooms.
  • The computer has a rating that evolves based on its win/loss just like human players.
  • The system supports the generation of web pages that display player rating information.
  • The new system has been introduced for a beta period beginning with Spades and Cribbage.
  • Modifications will be made based on user feedback. After the initial test period, ratings support will be added to new games as quickly as possible.

NOTE: During the beta period the system may experience some instability, and players might occasionally find their ratings reset.

    How the ratings system works:

  • For all two-player games, the USCF formulas are used without alteration.
  • For four-player partnership games, each partnership pair is averaged and treated as an individual.
  • For multi-player, non-partnership games (i.e. Hearts, Dominoes) there is one winner. The losers are scored against that one winner, and the winner scored against the average of the three losers.

The USCF formulas have three components: the player's original rating, the probability that the player will win, and a development coefficient (K).

  • Probability of winning = 1 / (10(- difference in ratings / 400) + 1)
  • K = 20 if RatingOld is greater than 2400
  • K = 30 if more than 30 games have been played
  • K = 50 for new players
  • Result of game = 1 for a win, 0 for a loss, and .5 for a draw
  • Rating New = Rating Old + K * (result of game - probability of winning)

For partnership games, the rating differences used to calculate the probability is the average of each team.

The new ratings are still calculated on an individual basis, using the partnership's probability and the individual's K value.

For free-for-all games, the average of the losers' ratings is determined, and that is used to calculate the probability of winning.

Then, each player's rating is changed based on that probability and what their own K value should be.

In backgammon, the common practice is to use the FIBS rating system. This takes into account:

  • The length of the match
  • The experience of the players
  • The difference in ratings between the two players

The FIBS rating scheme is explained in detail at: http://www.northcoast.com/~mccool/fibsrate.html This is the scheme Hoyle Backgammon will use.

For all Hoyle games, a player's initial rating starts at 1500.

All of our computerized players are rated and these ratings will evolve over time, just as a player rating can change. The computer's rating is on a per-server basis. A benefit of this strategy is that if a group of users cannot find four human players they will still be able to play a rated game. By maintaining these on a per-server basis, beginner rooms will not affect the advanced rooms, and vice versa (i.e. the computer's rating should converge rather than fluctuate).

    Leaving a game in progress:

It is recognized that the Internet is not as stable as one might hope, so there are several ways for a player to leave a table in the middle of a game.

So if a player disappears from a rated game in any of the following ways:

  • by their own free will (stand up or exit the room)
  • by their connection to the game being dropped (by Hoyle or some network failure)
  • the other players boot them...

the Hoyle system will simply increment their INCOMPLETE counter, and nothing more. In other words, the player will not be penalized in any way other than an increase in the incomplete game counter. The other players at the table will be unaffected and can finish their rated game. The players that are at the table at the end of the game have their ratings adjusted. This means that if a player rejoins a game, or joins a game in progress, their rating will be adjusted at the end of the game.

Note that leaving a game is only significant once a player has made a valid play. Until that point, they may leave and not be penalized.

Two other ways for a player to leave a table involve a flipside moderator. A moderator may boot a player from the table, or may ban a player from the system. In either case, the offending player will take both an INCOMPLETE and a LOSS. The remaining players at the table will be unaffected.

Lastly, a rated game may be stopped early by a game reset. This will not affect the ratings of those players at the table since a full consensus is needed to reset a game.

None of the casino games will be rated since in most of the games a player competes against the house and not other players. In effect, there is an inherent skill level indicated by the size of a player's bank.

All of the remaining Hoyle games will eventually have ratings implemented. In games such as Crosswords, Word Searches, or Word Yacht a player must have at least 1 opponent at the end of the game for their ratings to change.

    Tips

Did you know you can control-click people in the players list to add/remove them to/from private chat?
